The hatch is closed and the windlass is protected under. Note the cut out in the front corner of the hatch for the anchor chain when attached. (I only put the 100 ft of chain on board when I go cruising.) The two covers at the back of the hatch are the toe switches for the windlass easier for lowering and raising. I put some Teflon on the rail to protect the teak rail from the chain.
